PETA: Monkey should get ownership of 'selfie'

Seriously. PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is suing a photographer "in hopes of giving a monkey copyright ownership of a selfie."

Yet, we still have the ridiculous argument about whether a fetus is actually a "human." Hell, our US Senate won't even pass a ban on abortions after 20 weeks.

Where are all the American "progressives" citing the typical "we need to be more like Europe" now? Oh, that's right -- because Europe is actually quite a bit more conservative in the abortion realm.

Hube,

I think for many liberals -- even if they're not brave enough (or too defensive) to say it -- abortion is the least of what offends them about the far right on social issues.

Standing alone, I absolutely don't have an issue with major restrictions. It should be everyone's goal to cut the abortion rate even further than it's fallen over the last 25 years (and it's ironically fallen thanks to many of the efforts of Planned Parenthood and other sex education efforts that the religious right opposes).

But the abortion issue never stands alone, does it? And that's why liberals fight so hard. Because banning abortion isn't actually the goal of the Santorums and Huckabees of the world! If it were, I would absolutely agree on a personal level (though I'm practical enough to realize that if Roe is overturned, red states would become wastelands of jailed doctors, botched abortions and teen runaways and suicides).

Their movement is first and foremost about women not having sexual freedom or control of their bodies. It's about perpetuating a literally made-up definition of "traditional marriage," a made-up history of monogamy, and badmouthing birth control and homosexuality.

I've long said -- with tongue only partly in cheek -- that if I were the Benevolent Dictator of the United States (BDOTUS) I would happily trade abortion rights for:

* banning abstinence-ONLY education, which doesn't work -- period -- and leads to unwanted pregnancies and abortions

* making birth control as widely available as possible (proven time and time again to prevent unwanted pregnancies AND abortions)

* the far right ceasing its outdated whining/and or blatant hypocrisy about gays, trans people, S&M, divorce, sex before marriage, breasts on television, open relationships, and literally everything that consenting adults do behind closed doors.

* leaving Planned Parenthood (abortions aside) alone, since the remaining 97% of its resources go toward *preventing* abortions via education and contraception.

As much as these extremists act as though Roe v. Wade is the be-all-end-all, I'm pretty sure none of the HuckaSantorumCruzes would accept this deal.

BDOTUS has spoken.

Ah yes, conspiracy theories and the "far right" boogeyman.

Made up history of monogamy, Dan? Really? I know plenty of couples who have years-long monogamous relationships, including my own parents, who have been married for 29 years.

Actually, abstinence-only education does work. I haven't become a father. I plan to stay that way until after I get married someday.

Birth Control is widely available. Sounds like you're channeling the proven liar Sandra Fluke.

Sorry, but a man who puts on a dress and pretends to be a woman is still biologically a man. Same with a woman who pretends to be a man. I ultimately don't care if they do it, but still, they're ignorant of a thing called biology. I can accept gays and lesbians, but this trans nonsense is a little out there for me.

Leave Planned Parenthood alone? The same planned parenthood that sells baby parts? Give me a break, Dan.

For example, even my ultra-liberal sister and her fiancee are put off by how his brother wants to become a woman. They ask the quite logical question, why can't he just be gay? It's really affecting my future brother-in-law, which is surprising, again, considering how liberal he is. I suppose they're just engaging in "outdated whining" to you, Dan.

"Because banning abortion isn't actually the goal of the Santorums and Huckabees of the world!"

So what (if that's even actually true)? What power/influence do these guys actually have? Answer: virtually NONE based on the polls.

And seriously, what Carl said: Traditional marriage is a "made-up" story? Really, dan?

Posted by: Hube at September 26, 2015 09:30 AM

For the record, I'm not a fan of Santorum. I like Huckabee just fine, but contrary to Dan's conspiracy theories, they have very little power. Again, that's based on the polls.

And I saw that statement about traditional marriage being "made up" and had to respond. Like I said, my folks have been happily married for 29 years. They've been with each other for about 32 years. My grandparents were married for 58 years before my grandpa passed away in 2006. My aunt and uncle were together for 44 years before my uncle died in 2013. I know plenty of couples outside my family who have been together for years, since high school.

My wife and I have chosen to be monogamous so far, but we enjoy talking about what adventures might change that in the future.

My parents have been married for 42, Carl. Both sets of grandparents were married for 50+.

Traditional marriage is a property arrangement. Surely you know that. We (as a society) changed the definition of marriage more than 100 years ago.

And as for monogamy, it was not the norm, even in our fair country, until the early-ish 20th century. Men were never expected to be sexually monogamous. Mistresses, prostitutes etc were accepted. The feminist revolution brought an end to that. But instead of insisting on the same freedoms for themselves, the movement brought about a ban on sexual exploration for both genders. The results have not been wonderful, based on the # of cheaters (caught or otherwise) that we have today.

Also Carl.....You are aware that the abstinence-only education movement is not about not becoming a father, right? It's about not having sex.

Hube:

What people try to call "traditional marriage" is the last 100 or 150 years' worth of marriage. I'm NOT calling that made up. I'm calling it a ridiculous term -- "Traditional." I'm calling absolute BS on the idea that this is the first time we have "redefined" marriage. It's evolved over hundreds of years, and marriages even in the 19th Century would be nearly unrecognizable to us today!

Traditional marriages were not based on mutual attraction or love. They were about convenience, many were arranged. These were property transactions where a dowry was paid, not an equal partnership. They were elationships designed to forge political alliances, further business deals, make more kids to work on the farm, etc.

You're a student of history, I know you've heard this stuff before.
