Yeah, it was stupid. But consider --

Comedy Central's Larry Wilmore had a fit yesterday due to some of Fox News's talking heads not immediately diving in with the "racist" label to describe the horrific church shootings in South Carolina.

Saying the network's coverage “makes my fucking head explode,” Wilmore was miffed at

Elisabeth Hasselbeck suggest[ing] the violence was an “attack on faith,” her co-host Steve Doocy also suggest[ing] it had something to do with religion, guest E.W. Jackson outright disput[ing] race-based suggestions about the crime, and anchor Jenna Lee later sa[ying] that despite the “hate crime” designation it’s too early to know what happened.

Since it was pretty clear early on that the killer's motivation was racial hatred, I get Wilmore's angst.

HOWEVER -- how many times have we seen the mainstream media equivocate over other instances of such violence?

Answer: Many. Here's but one (very good) example.

If the MSM -- and the Obama administration -- were consistent, here's how they'd have played out the coverage of the S. Carolina shootings:

  • minimal mentions of his race/religion
  • minimal-to-no mentions of the term "terror" and "terrorism"
  • many mentions of "no clear indication of (shooter's) motivation
  • Boss Obama would caution against "jumping to conclusions"
  • stories about worries of a "backlash" against Caucasians
  • (sympathetic) stories about how the killer was taunted, teased in his youth
  • mentions that "other races/cultures have their lunatics, too"

In addition, despite the now-silly sounding comments by some at FNC, at least they weren't immediately sucked into a narrative like, say, "Hands up, don't shoot" which still persists among some MSM types despite it's (proven) falsehood.

Wait. This whole thing is a swirling mess. He wore apartheid flag, but he had black friends. What crazed racist has black friends? He was on suboxone which is known to be associated with violent outbursts. There may well be a racial angle here but everyone seems to be ignoring the mental health aspect which may well be the primary driver. Can't we just once wait for the facts to come in before deciding anything?

Hube: The heck with Fox News -- Jeb Bush wouldn't admit it was racially motivated *six hours ago*. I give politicians of all stripes leeway to do their duck, cover and pander thing for a minute (because they're all pretty much a-holes), but it's getting a little crazy now, and he's taking a significant risk**. Even Santorum is being very clear about it as of this morning.

Duffy: Yes, because white guys are never evil, just "mentally ill," right? White guy shoots up a movie theater because he hates women, Caitlyn Jenner, or blacks, and he's *definitely* mentally ill. But when a brown guy in a turban blows up a building? No, he had his wits fully about him, and just hates stuff. Am I understanding the flip side of The Narrative correctly?

**More importantly, he's showing a side of himself that I actually thought he'd be smart enough to avoid: He's been as politically bipolar as McCain and Romney so far. And I was sure he was going to be a smart candidate who'd have an extremely good chance to win it all.

If I were an employee of Comedy Central, I wouldn't be throwing a fit over the actions/words of cable channel employees. Let's not forget that Comedy Central was too chickens*** to let "South Park" depict Muhammad standing in a doorway and then edited a later episode to remove criticism of such practices. Whatever you can say of FOX's reporting, I sure don't need a lecture from a self-righteous pinhead working for a self-proclaimed edgy channel that folds like a lawn chair when faced with something more severe than a few complaint letters.

Hmm, threatening to kill someone over a drawing? Why, I do believe that's another thing the MSM and Team Obama have actively tried to downplay over the last few years. Not to mention a terrorist shooting up a Jewish deli.

Dan, Duffy didn't say anything like that. Typical liberal move by you, to basically imply that your ideological opponents are "racist."

I mean Duffy no ill will. But I'd be quite surprised if someone could point me to a moment where, after a Muslim extremist had committed an inexplicable, atrocious act, Duffy (or any conservative) used Duffy's words that there "may well be an anti-American or anti-Christian angle here," but that the mental health aspect could be the "primary driver."

Isn't that a *given* with Muslim extremists, though, dan?
