... but The Messiah's gonna close it anyway??
A Pentagon report requested by President Obama on the conditions at the Guantánamo Bay detention center concluded that the prison complies with the humane-treatment requirements of the Geneva Conventions. But it makes recommendations for improvements including increasing human contact for the prisoners, according to two government officials who have read parts of it. (Source.)
Who knew? Probably just about anyone with an inkling of common sense. But why let that keep one from demonizing folks like GW Bush as "evil incarnate?"
Just more change bulls*** you can believe in.
Is it possible that this report appeared after Obama made his decision?
Gitmo has become an unfortunate symbol, well earned, that stands for the violation of human rights that the Bush Administration has become world infamous for, a big blot on our record.
That said, now I am deeply disturbed at Obama's apparent support for rendition, and his recent position against habeas corpus re detainees in Afghanistan. The first enables torture to continue in the name of America, the second enables American forces to sweep up anyone they please with no recourse. Consider a foreign power behaving like this on our soil. This is morally wrong! There are humane alternatives that honor human rights.
We need to get out of Afghanistan -- Look at what this is doing to our values! There can be no victory this way!!!
Posted by: Perry at February 21, 2009 12:58 PMBut, Perry, the ultimate message is that it a symbol based off falsehoods, as this report showed. For partisan or PR advantage, people attacked the detention center at Gitmo accusing , by its mere existence, of violating the Geneva Convention. This report is just the latest evidence that no such thing was true.
Posted by: Paul Smith at February 21, 2009 02:12 PMPerry, that's why these evil men are doing these evil things to these evil people(although you apparently don't think so). SO A FOREIGN POWER NEVER DOES THIS ON OUR SOIL.
Posted by: h. at February 21, 2009 06:22 PMI'm all for a no torture policy when we are dealing with civilized people.
Unfortunately, the members of the jihadi horde reject any concept of advanced civilization. They view civilized behavior as weakness.
