A sign of things to come under an Obama administration

Not just a return to the Fairness Doctrine, but outright legal intimidation of free speech:

Barack Obama is striking back fiercely and swiftly to stamp out an ad that links him to a 1960s radical, eager to demonstrate a far more aggressive response to attacks than John Kerry did when faced with the 2004 "Swift Boat" campaign.

Obama not only aired a response ad to the spot linking him to William Ayers, but he sought to block stations the commercial by warning station managers and asking the Justice Department to intervene. The campaign also planned to compel advertisers to pressure stations that continue to air the anti-Obama commercial. (Link.)

Just imagine for a second -- just a second -- what the "progressive" response would be if George Bush had threatened to do same. "Fascist," "dictator" and "police state" are three terms that come to mind.

Unless there is outright false information in the ad, Obama should just clam up. I doubt he'd want more light to be shone on his relationship with Bill Ayers than is necessary.

Andy McCarthy adds:

The only two cents I'd add is that a real story — and one that should alarm people — is that this is what Obama thinks the Justice Department is for. Here is a guy who fought the Patriot Act, fought surveillance reform, has spoken admiringly of Ayer's radical views of the criminal justice system, and has a record as a Chicago legislator of being soft on violent crime. He is evidently ambivalent about going after terrorists and hardened criminals, but he wants to mobilize the Justice Department post haste to suppress political speech that he doesn't like. I regard that as more than a little disconcerting from a guy who wants to be president, pick the next attorney-general, and make U.S. law enforcement policy. The McCain campaign may not be too anxious to mix it up on this one given McCain's own history of suppressing political speech. But that doesn't make it any less a story.

Barack Obama, considering the Ayers ad to be an outright lie, just like the swift boating of Kerry was, is doing more than Kerry did, that is, asking the media not to broadcast it. That is Obama exercising his free speech rights, which you do not wish to grant to him. I'd like to see Andy McCarthy's documentation that Obama has asked the Justice Dept to shut down free speech, as I don't think there is any, expect in the eyes of his enemies who wish to find any excuse to call BHO a facist, especially coming from the right who never speak a word against Bush's violations of the law and of the Constitution. Your complaints against BHO are baseless!

Perry: You are a cliché of a parody. If this was George Bush, you'd be (rightly) bitching about it to everyone who would listen.

Obama "exercising his free speech rights" by asking the DoJ to intervene is like saying the IRS is doing same when they prosecute you for not paying your taxes even though you did. If there is ANY outright lie in the ad, Obama can sue for libel/slander. But he's not, is he?

You're pathetic.

Suing would take us well past the election, as you know well, Hube. I hope he does anyway, for the sake of the candidates in future elections.

Yes -- and you haven't said WHY Obama should sue this group. Please tell us all WHY this ad in "untruthful" in a way that makes it slanderous/libelous.

Because it represents a "guilt by association" attack on Obama. Where in Obama's record is there any indication whatsoever that he holds to the Ayers radical behavior of many years ago? Sorry this all has to be spelled out to you, Hube. I'm glad to see Obama pushing back against this garbage, and you should be too, now that you know better!!!

Talk about having to have it spelled out!

Why did Obama have ANY association AT ALL with an UNREPENTANT TERRORIST, Perry? And Ayers' behavior isn't from "many years ago;" he STILL believes in it even though he won't act on his desires anymore (apparently). It isn't "guilt by association," it is a legitimate questioning of his association with this ultra-radical.

Get a clue.
