The country wants to "ban ridiculous names for babies."
While this news essentially is tongue-in-cheek, just imagine if Fascist Dictator George Bush proposed such a law ... or even a mere state legislator. The ridicule heaped upon them (rightly) by the MSM would be prodigious. Yet, the AP provides a surprisingly balanced report with regards to Venezuela.
Surprise.
I'm not sure this is as bad the state regulating reincarnations. What constitutes "ridiculous?" I suspect that Hugo doesn't qualify? or does it?
Posted by: soccer dad at September 2, 2007 12:39 PMOn the other hand, look at some of the names on your class rosters this year, Hube. maybe Chavez is on to something here...
Posted by: Rhymes With Right at September 2, 2007 01:48 PMI do believe that South Korea has regulated family names for a while: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inmyongyong_chuga_hanjapyo
Posted by: Miss AO at September 2, 2007 06:57 PMI remember reading an article in the WSJ about this, but it was in Germany. The idea was that children shouldn't have to suffer through life because their parents are morons. The example given was that of a couple that wanted to name their son "4real" so he could be a rapper or some such nonsense, but couldn't because the name law prohibits numbers.
Posted by: G Rex at September 4, 2007 09:54 AMI think this is a good idea. If 2 parents named their child Shithead, an act of state tyranny would be more benevolent than the exercise of the parents' freedom to subject their child to scorn.
Posted by: Dana Garrett at September 5, 2007 09:54 AMThis tyranny is fortunately applied in most 1st world countries (all of Europe, most of developed Asia). In most of them, like here in Portugal, the state issues a list of "acceptable" names parents have to chose from. One could call it a limitation of the parents' freedom to violate their children's freedom to have a decent name. In Brazil, where this tyranny is not enforced, children have to live with names like Mr Shit or HitlerMussolini.
