Behind the scenes of "Battlestar"

Previously I noted that an upcoming comicbook version of "Battlestar Galactica" would provide a much needed backstory to the history of the Man-Cylon War(s). Newsarama has a first look at Battlestar Galactica: Zarek #1 and we're getting our first clues. Yes, the Cylons were created for manual labor. Yes, the eventually rebelled. The sneak peek doesn't offer much new regarding the Cylons (yet) but we're told that the human colony of Sagittaron was pretty much a "backwater" colony whose population were slaves. Slavery -- among the same interstellar species??

This to me seems highly improbable. The cooperation and moral growth necessary for a species to unite a single world, let alone twelve, is monumental. For them to still make use of human slavery is preposterous. And keep in mind that we're supposed to be related to these humans -- Earth is the so-called missing "13th Colony." Yet, here we are, not even close to having a single unified world government, and slavery is all but abolished! Indeed, the most modern countries did away with the practice more than 200 years ago.

This makes it so I don't even want to be "related" to the Twelve Colony humans!

I've got a copy of Zarek #1 -

The humans on Saggitarion weren't slaves in the sense we often think of it - they were "wage slaves" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wage_slavery

which isn't really slavery at all, but leftist types like to use the term anyway, as it makes socialism sound more moral.

Huh?

I think you meant to say that "wage slave" makes Capitalism sound more evil - which, yes is why we use the term wage slave. Pointing out the downsides of capitalism is what we leftists are all about (and don;t tell me there are no down sides to capitalism. I mean I love capitalism and Ice cream, but I don't want nothing but capitalism and ice cream - savy?)

Now then Hube, prior to reading that comment I was going to say that given that we are talking science fiction, I would allow a type of Capitalist slavery to exists - but I agree with you about the the impossibility of slavery as it existed in the south.

1. I meant "more moral in comparison to capitalism" -
of course, the real problem is that while capitalism has many, many problems - socialism is so much worse that it's not a viable option, really. (Shades of Churchill: IMHO, Capitalism is the worst economic system in the world - except for all the others).

2. Wage slavery is an idiotic term, since it trivializes real slavery. Wage exploitation makes more sense, but it doesn't quite have that visceral, gut wrenching sense leftists want to exploit.

Well put. Viva Sendero Luminosa! Viva the peoples revolution! Viva visceral and gut wrenching power of the term wage slavery!

Socialism is viable all over Europe, South America, and Asia in the varying degrees to which it is practiced. I suppose you meant pure socialism.
