Why I don't (and won't) coach anymore

'Cause you never know when you'll have one of these idiots show up (my emphasis):

A peewee football game turned violent Sunday when a parent began fighting with the coach, and allegedly pulled out a loaded gun.

During the game that started at 10am Sunday morning at Burholme Park, a father of a player started arguing with the coach because his son wasn't playing enough.

The father and the coach started fist fighting and the father allegedly pulled out a 357 magnum loaded with 5 live rounds after the coach started getting the upper hand in the fight.

I had coached track & field and softball over my 15+ years of teaching, and it got more brutal every year. Not the student athletes -- the parents. My brother-in-law used to coach soccer regularly, and he had to give that up for similar reasons.

What the hell is wrong with people??

At a travel softball tournament this weekend (coaching third base) and an attempt tag play was made in which the ump called our runner safe...Parents in the stands complained normally and then one brilliant role model of an adult yells out to their teams players to tag her harder and push her down to the ground so the ump sees the tag! Not being able to control my dismay at such a comment (10 and under mind you) I turned and comment to the crowd...'real nice comment' in which not just the dolt that made the innane comment but a chorus of the other teams fans began yelling and complaining that she was out! I turned to them and gave a plain and simple sh*t eating grin! Needles to say, we beat that team in the final game 6-5 after they had beat us the day before 12-0! As Jackie Gleason used to say....'how sweet it is!'...so much so to beat a team whose parents and coaches are like that!!!! One for the good guys....er...girls!

When I lived in The Bright Sunny South, they solved the problem thusly: Any parent who made any comment that was in any way negative about either the officiating or opposing players was summarily ejected as was their child. More than two offenses and you're out for the season. No ifs, ands or buts. The gun thing would never be a problem because, I kid you not, more people were armed than not. That tends to keep things civil and fewer people will start waving guns around.

Having coached little league for a number of years, I've been reluctant because of the "parent" problem. I had a "parent team" show up to practices and drink to the point of incarceration while watching our kids practice. I also had a parent call a coach an a$$hole because she, yes it was a she, didn't agree with the call. I can remember a game which denigrated to the point that the police had to be called, racial slurs were exchanged and one parent threatened to call the KKK. I also remember parents from the opposing team intimidating our 12 year old catcher to the point he walked off the field crying.

I agree, what the hell is going on?
