Dopey WNJ Letter of the Week

The award this week goes to Donna Seichepine of Wilmington who claims the belief that the media is liberal is a myth:

I have not been a regular reader of The News Journal for several years, although I do read and view a wide breadth of other news coverage from liberal, conservative and moderate sources. It's only while collecting a vacationing neighbor's mail over the past couple weeks that I've been reading The News Journal on a regular basis.

I've actually been amazed at the decidedly conservative slant the paper includes in its reporting, especially in Associated Press articles it chooses to run, even when there are easily identifiable factual discrepancies.

The myth of the liberal news media is no longer valid, although many still cling to the catchy phrase to express disdain. It's about as accurate as Fox News' claim to be "fair and balanced" -- clearly a clever marketing ploy and not a true indicator of its reporting.

"Amazed at the decidedly conservative slant ...?" The NEWS JOURNAL?? And I would guess that Ms. Seichepine believes that ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN are airwave versions of ... National Review?? As Bernie Goldberg (author of Bias and Arrogance) would say, such a belief is, quite frankly, delusional. But as I have said, it is changing. Liberals loathe Fox News for its conservative bias (which it does indeed have), but they'll never admit that it's the ONLY network that is right-leaning. Liberals have all the other networks. But given Fox's success, perhaps -- just perhaps -- the other news networks will give more credence to the conservative POV than they do now (admittedly, they have been doing so over the last 10 years or so). And Fox's straight news coverage is indeed as "fair and balanced" as any other network's; it's conservative bias is most evident on pundit-type shows like "The O'Reilly Factor," "Hannity and Colmes," "The Beltway Boys" and even the "panel" on "Special Report."
