Via Joanne Jacobs:
White students are fleeing majority-Asian high schools in Cupertino, a Silicon Valley town, reports the Wall Street Journal. The competition with hard-working, high-achieving Asian students -- especially those from immigrant families -- is too tough.Whites aren't quitting the schools because the schools are failing academically. Quite the contrary: Many white parents say they're leaving because the schools are too academically driven and too narrowly invested in subjects such as math and science at the expense of liberal arts and extracurriculars like sports and other personal interests.
The two schools, put another way that parents rarely articulate so bluntly, are too Asian.
At Monte Vista and Lynbrook, B students rank in the bottom third of the class. "White kids are thought of as the dumb kids," says a white PTA president.
Hmm. If I didn't know better, I'd say it was time to bring in some "diversity consultants" to do a number of things. 1) Check to see if the tests are "culturally biased" against whites. 2) Are teachers in these schools "culturally sensitive" to white students' needs? 3) How many non-Asian teachers are in these schools? In other words, there might be a need for more white "role models."
Etc.
classic commentary Felix, classic!
Posted by: cardinals fan at November 20, 2005 09:31 PMHelp me out. I don't get how the post relates to the title you gave it.
You are not surpised, but not surprised about what? That white kids are the dumb ones?
Posted by: Jason at November 21, 2005 02:02 PMThat white kids and their parents in California have picked up on the liberal mentality of blaming the system when they fail to achieve. Rather than look to themselves for solutions like mimicking the habits of those who succeed, they flee to a system with lower standards.
Asians outperforming everyone else (except blacks, who are deliberately held back by a Eurocentric system) is no surprise at all, which Felix may also be referring to.
mikem beat me to it. But, I hope he's kidding about blacks being "held back" by a Eurocentric system!
Posted by: Hube at November 21, 2005 04:24 PMOh yeah.
Posted by: mikem at November 21, 2005 04:38 PMI go to lynbrook and i'll tell you that we only have maybe 3 or 4 asian teachers. There is also no way to make a test biased. How could it?
