Florida State allowed to keep nickname

Looks like the tribe gets a veto on college nicknames.

The King notes:

If you name your team after a tribe you must get agreement from the tribe. This doesn't help the University of Illinois because there's no tribe called Illini. (It also happens to be the state's name, but the NCAA isn't making the university change that yet.) The University of North Dakota has one tribe supporting and one opposing.

One of King's commenters, Kevin, says:

Strange what some people call success. Let's say that all references to American Indians are expunged from team names. In one sense, this simply furthers the disappearance of Indians from American culture.

Soon, all that will be left of Native Americans will be brief passages in high school history books, casinos, and Ward Churchill. And then they wil be gone entirely, even their names.

I posted a couple weeks ago that I was somewhat swayed by Carol Spindel's argument against Indian mascots.

I don't understand why the right-wing is frothing at the mouth on this issue. If a tribe doesn't want a group to use their name, it is a common currency not to use it.

Is courtesy too much to ask of the right-wing?

Dana: Because a minority are making life miserable for a majority by falsely claiming to speak for everyone. You make sense in saying that if a tribe does not want their name used, then CC requires it not be used. But what if, as happened in Florida, most of a tribe considers it an honor and a minority do not? From what I read most American Indians properly see the usage as a compliment. It is meant to be that. And it is only the "frothing at the mouth" leftist elements that try to create yet another angry wedge of Americans by convincing a minority in a group to scream racism.
For a slice of America whose rallying cry is always hate and revolution, leftists and their useful idiots should refrain from describe others as "frothing".
